Set inside a reserve forest about 2 km from Kodai Lake, Bear Shola Falls is named for the bears once said to drink from it. A short walk through forest along a paved path leads to the roughly 40-foot falls, which drop into a small pool. A small temple to Lord Murugan, with roots in Palaiyar tribal worship, sits near the top of the falls.

Safety precautions

  • Avoid entering the pool at the base — rocks around it are slippery and the water is shallower than it looks
  • The path turns slippery in monsoon, when the falls are also at their strongest and most crowded

Know before you go

  • No entry fee and no fixed timings, but plan to arrive before 5 PM so you're not walking back through the forest after dark
  • In summer months the falls can run near-dry — visit June through September for the full flow

Local warnings

  • Monkeys are common along the path and can grab food or bags left unattended

Practical tips

  • Visit on a weekday if you want the forest walk to yourself — weekends draw noticeably more crowds
  • Wear shoes with grip; the final stretch to the falls is a short but rugged walk from the parking area
