One of the world's oldest solar research observatories, open for limited public tours
Established in 1899 and run by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, this is one of the world's oldest solar research observatories, sitting at about 7,700 ft near the Government Rose Garden. The Evershed effect, a landmark discovery in the study of sunspots, was first observed here in 1909. The public section includes an astronomy museum with historical instruments, a live solar image display, and views over the valley from the observatory grounds.
