Founded in 1895 and run by Sacred Heart College, this is one of India's oldest natural history museums, holding archaeology, geology, and botany collections built up over more than a century. It houses over 500 species of preserved animals, birds, reptiles, and insects, a herbarium with around 2,500 plant varieties, an orchidorium, and anthropological exhibits including regional coins and artifacts.

Know before you go

  • Timings are reported inconsistently across sources — some list two short windows (10-11:30 AM and 3-5 PM), others say 8:30 AM-6 PM. Worth confirming before making the trip specifically for this
  • The museum includes a preserved human foetus exhibit among its anthropological displays, which some visitors find unexpected — worth knowing in advance if traveling with young children

Practical tips

  • Photography is generally allowed inside
  • Pairs naturally with the Solar Observatory, since both are education-focused stops on the same side of town
