Also called the "Grand Cascade," Pambar Falls forms where Kodaikanal's town reservoir overflows south to eventually join the Vaigai River, tumbling over a zig-zagging series of rocks with three or four smaller cascades visible downstream. It earned its better-known name, Liril Falls, after a famous 1985 soap advertisement was filmed at its base pool, and it's remained a recurring filming location since. Reaching it means taking a path behind Pambar House, through forest known for endemic birds and butterflies.

Safety precautions

  • The approach path is steep and slippery — multiple sources specifically describe it as a difficult, careful walk rather than a casual stroll
  • Swimming in the base pool is common, but currents and rocks vary with water flow — check conditions on the day rather than assuming it's always calm

Know before you go

  • Free entry, open 10 AM–6 PM, with last entry at 5:30 PM
  • Flow is strongest in monsoon (Jun–Sep); the falls run noticeably thinner in dry months

Practical tips

  • Wear shoes with real grip — the path's slipperiness is consistently mentioned across visitor accounts
  • It's a popular local picnic spot, so weekday visits tend to be quieter than weekends
