Founded in 1863 by a French missionary and consecrated in 1866, La Salette Church was the first Catholic church built in Kodaikanal. Perched at around 7,000 ft on a cliff edge, it blends French and Tamil architectural styles and offers sweeping views of the surrounding hills. Reaching it involves climbing a steep staircase up to the church door.

Safety precautions

  • The staircase up to the church is steep — take it slowly, especially if the steps are wet

Know before you go

  • Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered, as a sign of respect for the site
  • If Mass or a service is in progress, keep visits to the viewing areas quiet and brief

Local warnings

  • The annual festival on August 14–15 draws large crowds from across South India — expect heavy footfall and traffic if visiting on those dates

Practical tips

  • The cliff-edge view from the church grounds is one of the better photo spots in this part of town
  • It's a fairly quick stop — worth pairing with Kurinji Andavar Temple or Kodai Lake in the same trip
