At 6,200 ft, Kukkal is Kodaikanal's highest point and one of its most remote sites — rock shelters formed from overhanging granulite and charnockite slabs, once home to the Paliyan tribe, with old hand paintings still visible near a small temple on the hilltop. There's no direct transport: you take a bus to Poombarai, then walk roughly 8 km through geranium plantations and forest to reach the caves, passing views of the Manjampath Valley where wild bison are sometimes spotted.

Safety precautions

  • A Forest Department permit is mandatory before trekking here — arrange it at the tourist office in Annasalai beforehand, not on arrival
  • Hiring a local guide is strongly recommended; the trail isn't signposted and phone signal is unreliable
  • Carry a flashlight or headlamp if exploring inside the rock shelters — there's no lighting

Know before you go

  • There's no motorable road to the caves — the 8 km trek from Poombarai is on foot only
  • Entry itself is free, but the permit process takes time, so plan ahead rather than same-day

Local warnings

  • The trail is known for leeches, especially in and around monsoon — wear covered footwear and check yourself periodically
  • Avoid the trek entirely during heavy monsoon (Jun–Aug); the path gets slippery and river crossings can become unsafe

Practical tips

  • Start early — this is a half-day-plus commitment once travel time from town is included
  • The forest rest house near the caves can be booked in advance if you want to camp overnight rather than do it as a day trip
