At 975 feet, Thalaiyar Falls is Tamil Nadu's tallest waterfall and one of the tallest in India, named for the thin, tail-like strip of water visible from a distance. There's no road directly to the falls — most visitors see it from the Dum Dum Rock viewpoint on the Kodaikanal-Batlagundu ghat road, where it appears as a silver streak against the cliff face.

Safety precautions

  • The falls has a documented history of fatal falls at the top, including two visitors in 2006 — hiking to the summit area is genuinely high-risk and not something to attempt casually
  • The base can only be reached via a roughly 6 km trek from Manjalar Dam through forest and rocky terrain, and only recommended in dry season
  • The water is considered polluted — avoid bathing or drinking it

Know before you go

  • Most visitors experience this as a viewpoint stop from the road — no trek required to see it
  • If you do plan the trek to the base, go with a local guide and stick to dry-season timing

Practical tips

  • Dum Dum Rock is the recognized viewpoint for photos — clearest on a dry, non-hazy day
  • Visible best after rain (Jul–early Sep) when flow is strongest, or in the cooler, clearer Oct–Mar window
