Sitting at roughly 2,000 m, Vattakanal is a small hillside hamlet known for its backpacker cafés — Altaf's, Café Nirvana, The Woods — and as the main starting point for treks to Dolphin's Nose and Echo Rock. Small waterfalls with natural pools sit a short walk from the village center, and the more serious among trekkers use Vattakanal as the launch point for the longer trek to Vellagavi, an isolated village with no road access.

Safety precautions

  • Trails around the village get slippery, especially in monsoon — sturdy footwear matters more here than in town
  • The natural pools near the small falls run year-round at 12–15°C — cold enough that swimming should be approached cautiously, not as a casual dip
  • The Vellagavi trek is a serious, multi-hour commitment with no road access — only attempt it with a guide and proper planning, not as a casual add-on

Know before you go

  • Temperatures drop below 10°C at night even when the day feels mild — pack warm layers if staying over
  • Cafés run their own hours and some close early; don't assume evening dining options like you'd find in town

Practical tips

  • Start the Dolphin's Nose/Echo Rock trek early morning for the clearest views and a sunrise-lit valley
  • Altaf's Café along the trail is a well-known stop for tea and snacks partway through the walk
